Description: This rare view of the river Fertha and the R.I.C. Barracks, Cahersiveen was taken in the 1880's, from the pier (foreground) build in 1822. When in the 1890's the now defunct Farranfore-Valentia Harbour Railway was built, this pier was built over, and the river up to the Barracks was filled in to become the goods yard and the station.

Description: The Bogman From Glenbeigh

I met him on the Milltown road, a chill December day,
As he rebuilt his rail of turf to make a good display;
A wiry, sunbrowned little man whose trials with life were seen
In his well-worn, threadbare coat and battered brown caubeen

You dug your spuds all in a row, paced by the farmer's son,
You had his shirt stuck to his back before the day was done;
Week in, week out, that was our lot, our aim at work or play
To have a happy Christmas round the homelands of Glenbeigh.

You'll never see our likes again, we joy in labour found,
And had the will to be content and stay in Irish ground;
Thrice a week till Christmas time these rails will help to pay
The bills that see the Christmas home to the boglands of Glenbeigh

Description: The Kerry Christmas Carol

Brush the floor and clean the hearth,
And set the fire to keep,
For they might visit us tonight
WHen all the world's asleep.

Don't blow the tall white candle out
But leave it burning bright,
So that they'll know they're welcome here
This holy Christmas night.

Description: The Wren Boys

The Wren - the Wren - the King of all birds
St. Stephen's day was caught in the furze.
Up with the kettle and down with the pan,
A penny or tuppence to bury the wren.

Description: Killorglin Town

There's a small little town called Killorglin
With a hill for a heart that is high
And the Laune is the blood that runs through it
A river both noble and shy.
For it comes and it goes on its living
It rises and falls with each tide
And its people are want to be giving
And welcome each one to its side.

Description: Christmas Time

Bright fire burning on the hearth, smell of fir and pine,
Turkey, ham, sweet currant cake, parsley, sage and thyme;
Neighbours' children at the door, small hands blue and cold,
Angel on the Christmas tree shedding lights of gold.

Wrenboys coming down the road dressed in gaudy clothes,
Jigs and reels and hornpipes, violins and dancing bows;
Buttered scones beside the fire, chestnuts and sweet corn,
A little face flushed with joy, a whisper, Dearest Mum!

Description: Portmagee

The goodwill of the season of Christmas,
For our visitors all I decree and especially
For those lucky people whose Birthplace was you,
Portmagee.
When I respond to the final alarm,
And my spirit can no longer be.
Immersed in your wonderful charm,
In your bosom I'll lie, Portmagee.

Description: Kerry Long Ago

Oh, God be with you Kerry, where in childhood we made merry,
As we heard the fiddler tuning up and resening his bow,
At the crossroads we'd be dancing and our cailíns shyly glancing, as
Their dark-eyed mothers used to do
In Kerry long ago.

Description: The Rose Of Tralee

The pale moon was rising above the green mountain,
The sun was reclining beneath the blue sea,
When I strayed with my love through the clear crystal fountain
That stands in the beautiful vale of Tralee

Description: The Ghost Train for Croke Park

Wisha, God be with you Kerry, where they never lock the fire,
With the kettle singing on the sooty crane,
And my mother - 'Will you hurry now and leave the mirror sound,
Myko Lairy's passing Hurley's with the train.'
Then the quick run out the half-door of that houseen down the Lane,
And I dressed as neat as any Excise clerk,
With the blue suit and the brown boots and the medal on its chain,
The night we took the ghost train for Croke Park.

Description: The Waters that flow Around Valentia

By the waters that flow around Valentia,
There's one spot of fame and renown,
That catches the eye from the quarry,
As you gaze up the river to town.

Description: Christmas Shopping List

For my wife I order that the sun
Be freshly squeezed each morning of her life.
That the moon attend ceremoniously
On all her comings and going
And that the stars should never cease
Doing the rounds of her eyes.

For my daughter I command that roads
Be laid smoothly between mountains
That rivers echo guidance among valleys,
That a fair wind rise to being her
In good time again and again to swim
In the morning waves of her childhood.

For my son let the satellites beam
Messages of love precisely here and there
For the time being, and the grids that net
The seas and continents direct him
To all the co-ordinates he chooses,
Then catch and trawl him home.

And for myself if all of this
Might come to pass in seven days
What more could I want? I would know
That I was right to have ideas
Above my station, and I would
Be complete and know that it was good.

Description: The Glen

Beneath my view mid waters blue,
I saw the rocks of Droum,
The silvery sand of Bill Williams strand
and sunlit Ballinahown.
Feha Bridge where oft I trudged
yet spans the reeking spray.
That dashes voide in every side
unto St. Finan's Bay.

Amid those scenes so beautiful
The Puffin breaks and roars
As if to rouse my kith and kin
who sleep by Caladh's shores.
And vowed to God that to that sod
I may return some day
My bones to rest near Keel's old church
beside you Finan's Bay.
